Earth Hour dares you to commit more for the environment

From going beyond, Earth Hour dares everyone to do more in order to save the planet as we celebrate this annual global activity on March 31, 8:30PM. Since 2008, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) organized this activity worldwide after it was done in Sydney, Australia in 2007 and headed by y WWF-Australia and The Sydney Morning Herald to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change by turning off non-essential lights for one hour. Together with all the environmentalists and advocates, Earth Hour will be taking a bolder step on daring everyone to do more and beyond from switching off their lights on the event but making it as commitment to do energy conservation, recycling, proper waste management, planting trees, usage of eco friendly materials on schools, work and home, and more.

With the ‘I Will If You Will’ challenge of Earth Hour, WWF encourage everyone to stand up and make a concrete promise to save the planet. The commitment can be as simple as recycling, to switching to energy-efficient light bulbs, turning off your mobile charger, or signing up for paperless banking and encourage others to do the same but on a “dare” way. Participants can post their dares publicly via Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and email.

As of now there’s no exact location in the Philippines where will be the Earth Hour activity will happen, so I encourage everyone to log on to www.EarthHour.org and sign up to get alerts on the location and activities on your respective regions as clocks strikes at 8:30PM on March 31, 2012. Since it started in 2007 there are already 5251 cities participated that reaches 1.8 billion people in 135 countries across all seven continents.

Here in the Philippines, Earth Hour campaign of WWF-Philippines has led the global switch-off since 2009, ranking number one globally in terms of town and city participation for three consecutive years. A record-breaking 1554 Philippine cities and municipalities switched off in 2011, 1076 in 2010, 647 for 2009 and over 50 during the country’s inaugural Earth Hour switch-off in 2008.

Past corporate champions include the Yuchengco Group of Companies, Coca-Cola, Honda Cars, LG Electronics, ArthaLand, McDonald’s, Philips, Ayala Malls, SM Supermalls, Meralco, Shangri-La Hotels and many others.  And now current partners include the Department of Energy, ABS-CBN, GMA-7, TV5, Discovery Channel, Global News Network, the Philippine Star, Philippine Daily Inquirer Online, Aftercall Magazine, Radyo Veritas, DZIQ, Globaltronics, Photoworld Manila and myself the owner of Ang Sawari Ko (now known as ASK by Flow Galindez –www.angsawariko.com).
